Marie Antoinette was executed by guillotine on October 16, 1793 at the Place de la Concorde in Paris, France. The former queen of France was found guilty of treason against the revolution by the Revolutionary Tribunal. 

The events leading up to her execution

      Marie Antoinette was imprisoned in the Temple on August 10, 1792, and then moved to the Conciergerie after the execution of her husband, King Louis XVI, in January 1793. 

    • Trial

      Marie Antoinette was tried by the Revolutionary Tribunal and found guilty of treason on all counts after a 15-hour trial. 

  • Public opinion

    Marie Antoinette was hated by the public, who believed her to be cruel and immoral.

  • Marie Antoinette was calm and dignified as she walked to the guillotine. 
  • Some say she stepped on the executioner's toes as she walked past. 
  • She apologized to the executioner, which were her last words. 
  • Her body was buried in an unmarked grave in the Madeleine cemetery. 

The aftermath 

  • In 1815, Marie Antoinette's remains were exhumed and given a Christian burial in the Abbey of Saint-Denis.
