Activated Charcoal to use as a Detox Method – Precautions Not Normally Mentioned.

Activated charcoal can cause several side effects, though it’s generally considered safe for short-term use, that said here are a few issues to be on the lookout for.

Common Side Effects

The most frequent side effects include gastrointestinal issues such as constipation, black stools, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain

These occur because charcoal binds to substances in your digestive system.

Serious Concerns

Medication Interactions: Activated charcoal reduces the absorption of drugs and other chemicals in the stomach and intestines, which can decrease the effectiveness of medications you take by mouth, including those for heart conditions, diabetes, and birth control

Nutrient Absorption: It doesn’t distinguish between toxins and essential nutrients, so frequent use may interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals like calcium and potassium, potentially leading to nutritional deficiencies over time

Respiratory Issues: If you inhale the fine powder, it can cause coughing, shortness of breath, and in severe cases, pneumonitis (lung inflammation) if aspirated into the lungs

Rare but Serious: In very rare cases, activated charcoal can cause bowel blockages or gastrointestinal obstruction

Important Note

If you’re taking activated charcoal, you should take it at least one hour apart from any medications or supplements.

It’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before using it, especially if you’re on any medication regimen
