However, We brought the cave with us as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">War is not a glitch in human nature. It is one of its oldest features, scaled up by organization, technology, and story. That does not make it less sick. It makes the persistence of it more damning.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">The question is not whether humans <em>can<\/em> kill one another at industrial scale. We have done it repeatedly. The serious question is how ordinary people, living in societies that also produce hospitals, music, and law, become willing participants in the destruction of other ordinary people they will never meet.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\">The evolutionary residue<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Humans are a coalitional species. Small groups that could cooperate internally and treat outsiders as threats or resources outcompeted groups that could not. That pattern is visible in chimpanzees and in the archaeological and ethnographic record of hunter-gatherer violence. It is not \u201cprimitive ignorance\u201d in the cartoon sense. It is a set of psychological tools that once helped groups survive: in-group loyalty, out-group suspicion, status competition among males, and the ability to treat some lives as less real than others.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Civilization did not erase those tools. It gave them uniforms, flags, supply chains, and justifications. The tribe became the nation, the raid became the campaign, and the story became ideology, religion, or \u201cnational interest.\u201d The scale changed. The underlying machinery did not disappear.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">This is why \u201cwe left the cave\u201d is only half true. We left the physical cave. We did not leave the tendency to draw a bright line between <em>us<\/em> and <em>them<\/em> and then treat the line as moral fact.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\">How the machinery works without anyone feeling like a monster<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Most people who participate in war are not sadists. That is the part that should disturb us more than the existence of sadists.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Several well-documented mechanisms make large-scale killing possible:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"auto\">\n<li><strong>Distance and abstraction.<\/strong> The further the target is from a face, a name, and a shared language, the easier it is to treat them as a category. Modern war multiplies this. A person can authorize or carry out harm while experiencing it as a technical or political problem rather than a human one.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Obedience and role.<\/strong> People do things in uniform, under orders, or inside institutions that they would not do as private individuals. Responsibility is diffused upward and sideways. \u201cI was following orders\u201d is not only an excuse after the fact; it is how the act is experienced while it is happening.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dehumanization and moral licensing.<\/strong> Enemies are described as animals, vermin, occupiers, terrorists, infidels, or existential threats. Once that language sticks, ordinary moral restraints loosen. The other side is doing the same thing in the other direction. Both sides usually believe they are defending something sacred.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reciprocity and fear.<\/strong> After the first atrocities, revenge feels like justice. After the first losses, not fighting feels like betrayal of the dead. Escalation becomes its own logic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Status and meaning.<\/strong> War offers young men (and, increasingly, others) a script of significance that civilian life often fails to provide: belonging, purpose, honor, and a chance to matter. That is not a small temptation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"auto\">None of this requires unique evil. It requires ordinary psychology plus organization plus a story that makes killing feel necessary or even virtuous.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\">The \u201crational\u201d layer that is still irrational<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\">War is not <em>only<\/em> bloodlust. States fight over territory, resources, security dilemmas, prestige, and domestic politics. Game theory describes real traps: if you think the other side might strike first, striking first can look prudent. Deterrence can keep a peace that looks like peace only because both sides are terrified.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">That is the uncomfortable part. Some wars have identifiable strategic logic. Most still look insane when you look at the bodies and the ruined cities afterward. The \u201crational\u201d calculation is usually local and short-horizon. It treats other people\u2019s children as acceptable risk. From a species-level or even a civilizational-level view, that is still a failure of imagination and morality.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">The 20th century showed what happens when industrial capacity meets those old instincts. The 21st has shown that nuclear weapons, drones, and information warfare change the texture of the problem without dissolving it. We became more efficient at both preventing some wars and making others cheaper to start or harder to end.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Steven Pinker and others have argued that the <em>rate<\/em> of death from violence has fallen over the long run as states, commerce, and norms constrained private and interstate killing. That claim is contested in its details, but the directional point is real: we are not living in a constant war of all against all. We built institutions that suppress a lot of violence. We also built institutions that can mobilize violence on a scale no cave band could imagine.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Progress and barbarism are not sequential stages. They coexist.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\">Did we ever leave the cave?<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\">In the important senses, yes.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">We produced science that understands disease, law that at least pretends every person has rights, art that insists other minds are real, and international norms that treat aggressive war as a crime even when those norms are routinely violated. We can feed billions, extend life, and talk across oceans. A medieval warlord would not recognize the moral language we now use, even when we fail to live by it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">In another sense, no.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">We still organize the world into armed groups that claim the right to kill on behalf of a story. We still raise children inside those stories. We still find it easier to mourn \u201cour\u201d dead than the dead on the other side of the line. We still confuse strength with the willingness to destroy. And we still, after every war, write the same shocked essays about how this should have been impossible.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">The cave was never only a place. It was a way of seeing: a small circle of light, a larger darkness full of threats, and a fire that makes the shadows look like truth.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">We have better lamps now. We use them to draw bigger circles. Then we fight over the circles.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\">What a serious response looks like<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Calling war \u201ccompletely irrational\u201d is emotionally honest and analytically incomplete. It is often locally rational for the people who start or continue it, and globally catastrophic. The task is not to pretend humans are angels who were corrupted by politicians. The task is to design institutions, incentives, and cultures that make the old machinery expensive to use.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">That means taking seriously:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"auto\">\n<li>how easily language turns people into categories<\/li>\n<li>how obedience and group identity override private conscience<\/li>\n<li>how security dilemmas and honor cultures lock groups into escalation<\/li>\n<li>how little most citizens actually know about the wars fought in their name<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"auto\">It also means refusing the cheap opposite error: that war is simply \u201chuman nature\u201d and therefore inevitable in its current form. Human nature includes the capacity for restraint, trade, law, and shame. Those are also old. They just require more maintenance.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">The ignorance is not that we never left the cave. The ignorance is believing that leaving it was a one-time event instead of a daily, institutional, and personal discipline.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">We know what the other humans look like. We have photographs, names, and medical records. We kill them anyway when the story is strong enough. That is not a mystery of the Stone Age.
