Cyprus Confidential<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n

The Mediterranean island of Cyprus has long been a prize contested by empires, where peoples, religions \u2014\u00a0and wealth \u2014 converge.<\/p>\n

For decades, Moscow has cast a shadow over the tiny country, where free-flowing Russian money has enriched a few while fueling a rogue financial system, operating inside the European Union and beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the Russians came to Cyprus, they brought not only Russian corruption, they brought Russian organized crime, they brought Russian agents of the Russian intelligence services,\u201d\u00a0one Kremlin critic told ICIJ<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cyprus Confidential, a new investigation by ICIJ, Paper Trail Media and 67 media partners worldwide, reveals Cyprus\u2019 pivotal role in shielding the wealth of oligarchs and powering the Putin regime, including after Russia\u2019s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

As the West sought to block funding for Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s war machine, financial enablers in Cyprus \u2014\u00a0including accounting powerhouse PwC<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 scrambled to keep his allies a step ahead of looming sanctions.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not only Russians who\u2019ve exploited Cyprus\u2019 booming financial secrecy industry to undermine Western democracy.<\/p>\n

ICIJ’s analysis of 3.6 million leaked documents<\/a>\u00a0uncovered a secret bid by the Assad regime to buy forbidden U.S. oil equipment through a Cyprus-based middleman at the height of the Syrian civil war.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, ICIJ\u2019s partners found that\u00a0a famous German journalist<\/a>\u00a0known for his fawning coverage of Putin agreed to receive around\u00a0$700,000 from a shell company tied to a Russian oligarch.<\/p>\n

Cyprus Confidential is based on seven separate leaks, predominantly from Cypriot financial services firms whose clients include former Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich and the steel tycoons behind Evraz, a Russian conglomerate that makes the train rails transporting arms and ammunition to Russia\u2019s troops in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The documents read like a who\u2019s who of Russia\u2019s elite \u2014\u00a0roughly two-thirds of the country\u2019s billionaires appear in the files, including dozens who\u2019ve been sanctioned.<\/p>\n
