For storm information specific to your area\noutside of the United States, please monitor products issued by\nyour national meteorological service.\n\n\nDISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK\n----------------------\nAt 600 AM MDT (1200 UTC), the center of Hurricane Hilary was located\nnear latitude 21.5 North, longitude 113.4 West.  Hilary is moving\ntoward the north-northwest near 13 mph (20 km\/h).  A faster motion\ntoward the north-northwest is expected to begin later today, \nfollowed by an even faster motion toward the north by Sunday night. \nOn the forecast track, the center of Hilary will move close to the\nwest-central coast of the Baja California peninsula tonight and on\nSunday and move across southern California Sunday afternoon and \nSunday night.\n\nMaximum sustained winds are near 130 mph (215 km\/h) with higher\ngusts.  Hilary is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson\nHurricane Wind Scale.  Weakening is expected to begin today, but\nHilary will still be a hurricane when it approaches the west coast\nof the Baja California peninsula tonight and Sunday morning. Hilary\nis expected to weaken to a tropical storm by midday Sunday before it\nreaches southern California.\n\nHurricane-force winds extend outward up to 50 miles (85 km) from\nthe center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 265\nmiles (425 km).  A sustained wind of 46 mph (74 km\/h) and a gust to\n62 mph (100 km\/h) were recently reported at the Cabo San Lucas\nMarina.\n\nThe minimum central pressure is estimated to be 943 mb (27.85 \ninches).\n\n\nHAZARDS AFFECTING LAND\n----------------------\nKey messages for Hilary can be found in the Tropical Cyclone\nDiscussion under AWIPS header MIATCDEP4 and WMO header WTPZ44 KNHC\nand on the web at hurricanes.gov\/text\/MIATCDEP4.shtml.\n\nRAINFALL:  Hilary is expected to produce rainfall amounts of 3 to 6\ninches, with isolated maximum amounts up to 10 inches, across\nportions of the Baja California Peninsula through Sunday night.\nFlash and urban flooding, locally catastrophic, will be likely,\nespecially in the northern portions of the peninsula.\n\nHeavy rainfall in association with Hilary is expected across the\nSouthwestern United States, peaking on Sunday, and possibly lasting\nthrough Monday. Rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches, with isolated\namounts of 10 inches, are expected across portions of southern\nCalifornia and southern Nevada. Dangerous to locally catastrophic\nflooding will be likely.  Elsewhere across portions of the Western\nUnited States, rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected,\nresulting in localized flash flooding.\n\nWIND:  Hurricane conditions are expected within the hurricane\nwarning area tonight and early Sunday and are possible within the\nhurricane watch on Sunday.  Tropical storm conditions are occurring\nwithin the southern portion of the tropical storm warning area and\nwill spread northward today and Sunday.  Tropical storm conditions\nare possible within the tropical storm watch area today and tonight.\nTropical storm conditions are expected to begin in southern\nCalifornia on Sunday.\n\nWinds could be particularly strong and gusty in and near areas of\nhigher terrain.\n\nSTORM SURGE:  A dangerous storm surge is likely to produce coastal\nflooding along the western Baja California peninsula of Mexico near\nwhere the center passes the coast in areas of onshore winds, or\neast of the center if Hilary makes landfall. The surge will be\naccompanied by large and destructive waves.\n\nTORNADOES:  A tornado or two may occur Sunday over parts of the\nlower Colorado River Valley, Mojave Desert and Imperial Valley\nregions.\n\nSURF:  Large swells generated by Hilary will affect portions of the\ncoast of southwestern Mexico, the Baja California peninsula, and\nsouthern California over the next few days.  These swells are likely\nto cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
