(Natural News<\/a>) Canadian company Medicago has\u00a0<\/span>developed a plant-based vaccine<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>for the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19). The two-dose\u00a0vaccine uses virus-like particles (VLP) grown in a tobacco shrub to confer immunity against COVID-19.<\/p>\n

VLPs are molecules that closely resemble a virus. They are not infectious\u00a0since they do not contain genetic material.\u00a0Vaccines that use VLPs\u00a0train\u00a0the immune system to recognize\u00a0a virus and launch an attack if a person gets infected.<\/p>\n

Medicago\u2019s\u00a0vaccine is different from all authorized COVID-19 vaccines. Whereas\u00a0other\u00a0vaccines target\u00a0only\u00a0the spike protein, the molecule used by the coronavirus to infect host cells, the plant-based shot uses VLPs that resemble the overall structure of the\u00a0Wuhan coronavirus.<\/p>\n

A small Phase 1 study shows that recipients of the\u00a0vaccine produce 10 times as many antibodies as people who have had COVID-19. The data also indicate no links to blood clots, which have been reported in people\u00a0inoculated\u00a0with\u00a0the Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca vaccines.<\/p>\n

\u201cThus far, the safety profile from the Medicago pre-clinical data as well as the Phase\u00a01 and Phase\u00a02 data has identified nothing concerning regarding blood clotting or any other safety flags,\u201d Dr. Mark Carlson, the principal investigator for Be Well Clinical Studies, the Nebraska arm of the trial, told\u00a0<\/span>KETV<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0vaccine can be\u00a0distributed easily since it does not have to be stored at freezing temperatures. In addition, it can be manufactured quickly for less than the cost of other vaccines, according to Dr. Matthew Hong of Wake Research in North Carolina, which is also conducting trials for Medicago.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll you have to do is extract the spike protein from the plant from the leaves, and you have the vaccine,\u201d Hong told\u00a0<\/span>ABC News 11<\/em>. \u201cYou don\u2019t need all the background and all the other support systems.\u201d<\/p>\n

The firm is currently recruiting\u00a030,000 volunteers for a late-stage trial. To qualify, volunteers must be aged 18 years or older and have not\u00a0had or been vaccinated for COVID-19. This is increasingly difficult because around 50.7 percent of the adult American population has\u00a0received at least one dose.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur pool of potential subjects is shrinking daily, and so Medicago is trying to amplify this trial as quickly as possible,\u201d Carlson said. The firm hopes to have the results by fall for submission to American drug regulators. Herbs for treating the coronavirus<\/h2>\n

Researchers are also looking into herbs to treat COVID-19. In Thailand, healthcare providers have been using\u00a0an\u00a0extract of\u00a0the Asian plant fah talai jone to treat mild to asymptomatic infections. Multiple patients have recovered from the disease after\u00a0taking the herbal extract for just five days<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Also known as green chiretta or\u00a0<\/span>Andrographis paniculata<\/em>, the herb has been used for centuries in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat\u00a0lung infections. Its\u00a0antiviral properties are\u00a0<\/span>attributed to the compound andrographolide<\/a>, which also has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0study last April, Thai researchers treated six COVID-19 patients with 180 milligrams of andrographolide. All participants had mild symptoms, such as sore throat,\u00a0<\/span>headache<\/a>, cough and runny nose.<\/p>\n

Each participant\u2019s condition improved after three days, and their symptoms were gone after five. In addition,\u00a0none of the participants experienced any side effects.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are confident that\u00a0fah talai jone<\/span>\u00a0can cure COVID-19 patients who have mild symptoms and are asymptomatic,\u201d said Dr. Kwanchai Wisitthanon, the director-general of the\u00a0Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, which led the study.<\/p>\n

Last December, Thailand\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Ministry of Public Health<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>approved the use of the extract<\/a>\u00a0for treating the early stages of COVID-19. The use of the herbal treatment was on a voluntary basis\u00a0and was available only for people between the ages of 18 to 60 years\u00a0who exhibited minor symptoms. It should be administered within three days of confirming an infection, the\u00a0ministry said.<\/p>\n
