The American Revolution proved a people can not only overthrow an existing regime but establish a free, peaceful, and functional government of their own.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

According to the American Declaration of\u00a0Independence<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>, people enter into political society for the sake of protecting their inalienable rights, which are otherwise insecure.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

The question then arises: what can the people do if the government betrays its trust, and violates their rights?<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

The Declaration\u2019s initial answer is \u201c<\/span><\/i><\/b>that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government.<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

The people create the government, but in so doing they do not forfeit their right to vindicate their own rights, even against the very government they created.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Thus James Wilson asserted that the \u201c<\/span><\/i><\/b>vital principle<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u201d of\u00a0America<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>\u00a0is \u201c<\/span><\/i><\/b>that the supreme or sovereign power of the society resides in the citizens at large; and that, therefore, they always retain the right of abolishing, altering, or amending their constitution<\/span><\/i><\/b>.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

The natural law, as\u00a0America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s Founding Fathers understood it, is simply that portion of the law of God that could be discerned through unassisted reason, without reference to any particular revelation.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Alexander Hamilton noted that the\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>natural law<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0was \u201c<\/span><\/i><\/b>an eternal and immutable law, which is, indispensably, obligatory upon all mankind, prior to any institution whatever<\/span><\/i><\/b>.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>natural law<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0is a standard of political right that transcends the constitutions and statutes of particular regimes.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>This means it can be used as a basis for evaluating the actions of governments and rulers, and any that violate the natural law are to that extent immoral and unjust<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

The natural law provides a higher-law foundation for resistance to oppression, giving such resistance a moral validity that it could not possess otherwise.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

A right to revolution is unintelligible apart from the law of nature.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Hamilton<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/st1:city><\/st1:place>\u00a0asserted that \u201c<\/span><\/i><\/b>when the first principles of civil society are violated, and the rights of the whole people are invaded, the common forms of municipal law are not to be regarded. Men may betake themselves to the law of nature<\/span><\/i><\/b>.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

The right of revolution is an appeal to the law of nature against the injustice of the existing government.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is a legacy of this understanding, as it enables the ordinary citizen to defend his own rights against anyone who would seek to violate them, whether common criminal, foreign invader, or the citizen\u2019s own government.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Under the right circumstances, revolution is not only a right but a duty.\u00a0\u00a0When the train of abuses is long, and the people are clearly being crushed into servitude, and those who would resist have a reasonable chance of success, revolution becomes an obligation.<\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
